Due to inadequate snow conditions and to prevent resource damage, operating a snowmobile within the Glacier or Seward Ranger Districts and Turnagain Pass areas of the Chugach National Forest will be prohibited.

The Seward and Glacier Ranger Districts were originally due to open for snow machining on Dec. 1, and the Turnagain Area was scheduled to open effective Nov. 27. These closure orders will remain in effect until April 30, 2020, unless rescinded sooner as conditions allow.

While there is snow in many areas, conditions vary greatly this time of year. Most trails remain open to hiking, snowshoeing, and skiing through the fall and winter. Review key information you may need to know before you venture out such as: safety tips, fire restrictions, and motor vehicle use maps. Once conditions allow for winter snow machining, motorized users are responsible for knowing when and where they can and can't take a motorized vehicle. Please refer to our on-line motor vehicle use maps at, where copies of the maps can be downloaded. Chugach National Forest Avalanche Information Center forecasts and resources for avalanche awareness are also available online.
