Seward Community Foundation is essential in building a vibrant, strong community in partnership with Seward schools and service organizations like Bunnell Arts. Bunnell Arts is a non-profit arts exhibit, education and advocacy organization based in Homer. We serve all Kenai Peninsula Borough School District schools interested in presenting Artists in Schools (AIS). We place trained teaching artists in K–12 classrooms for 40+ hours of instruction in the arts, helping our schools meet Alaska Arts and Culture Standards. We were pleased to partner with Seward schools to present Dasha and Kima Hamilton, Artists in Schools, at Seward Middle and High Schools in late March of this school year. Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton provided a dynamic unit in poetry and spoken word that empowered Seward Middle and High School Students.

Bunnell Street Art Center’s Artists in the Schools Program aims to (1) provide an affordable and professionally-managed AIS program following ACSA’s model, (2) support Kenai Peninsula Borough School District (KPBSD) Art Curriculum, (3) inspire Alaska’s youth with greater knowledge and respect for the arts, (4) promote appreciation for cultural diversity and world heritage, (5) foster a vibrant, accessible program nurturing creative connections between community, youth and artists including youth at risk, (6) build on a history of providing successful programs and serve more schools in KPBSD, (7) employ trained Teaching Artists, (8) train more qualified artist-teachers, and (9) to educate and inspire teachers with exciting lesson plans and pre-residency workshops for school staff. When they apply, schools state individual school goals which shape the planning and experience of the residency. Schools choose their own AIS units.

A grant of $1000 from the Seward Community Foundation, matching support from Alaska State Council on the Arts, Rasmuson Foundation, gifts, private donors, school fees, and in-kind contributions made this program possible.

We are grateful for the visionary support of Seward Community Foundation and the hardworking and devoted staff in Seward Middle and High Schools, especially Trevan Walker and Jennifer Swander for inviting and supporting this program!

Sincerely,
