Around sixty inmates at Spring Creek Correctional Center, the maximum-security prison located at the head of Resurrection Bay, rioted for 10 hours from Tuesday night to Wednesday morning, the Department of Corrections said in a press release Wednesday.
The disturbance took place in the prison’s Hotel Mod, one of several housing units at Spring Creek. Around 9:00 p.m., prisoners “barricaded the entry to their housing unit and began destroying property,” the statement says.
Prison officials locked down the facility and called in “special operation response teams” from Kenai and Anchorage. Those groups arrived around 3:00 a.m. and secured the housing unit by 6:00 a.m.
The statement says only that officers used “non-lethal force” to subdue inmates.
The department reports no injuries to correctional officers or any of the 62 inmates said to be involved.
