On Tuesday the Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) approved a resolution recommending a preliminary right of way acquisition plat to facilitate Alaska Department of Transportation (DOT) plans to remove the longer of the two airport runways and lengthen the shorter in order to mitigate the flooding that periodically plagues the current runways.

Initially before P&Z in July, the original resolution has since been amended and a final substitute resolution was brought before the commission on Tuesday. After several citizens voiced objections to the overall DOT plans for the runway, P&Z Vice Chair Tom Swann stressed that the vote of the Commission would only be to approve the consolidation of several parcels of airport land, not the overall DOT plan itself.

The four present members of the Commission then voted unanimously to approve the resolution, which will now advance to the Kenai Peninsula Borough for approval.
