Update: The driver of the 2019 Volkswagen Golf has been identified as 31-year-old Allen Solomon of Fairbanks. Next of kin have been notified.
On Tuesday at approximately 1:30 p.m., a 2019 Volkswagen Golf struck the rear of a state snow grader plowing the Seward Highway near milepost 30. Though the grader operator emerged from the accident without injury, the unidentified driver of the Volkswagen was pronounced dead at the scene. Police determined that the driver struck the grader at a high rate of speed while not wearing a seatbelt. It was also reported that alcohol may have been a contributing factor to the collision.
Traffic delays persisted into the evening as crews worked to clear the vehicles, which both required tows. Officials will release the identity of the deceased once next of kin have been notified.
