Kenai Fjords National Park has temporarily closed the main trail to Exit Glacier after visitors reported multiple black bear encounters. Park spokesperson Shauna Potocky issued the announcement just after noon on Wednesday.
The closure affects a portion of the Exit Glacier Main Trail. Visitors may still reach the overlook of Exit Glacier via the Glacier View Trail.
“The public is reminded that traveling in bear country requires being prepared and bear aware. Take safety precautions such as carrying bear spray and knowing how to use it,” Potocky wrote in a press release.
“Visitors are asked to give bears plenty of space and not contribute to their stress, which can be increased by attempting to photograph them or having dogs in the vicinity. Do not get between a sow and her cubs. If a bear is between you and your destination, you will need to wait for the bear to clear the area.”
