Combat Fishing 2019 - Fishing Haul

Over 200 junior enlisted personnel from around Alaska came to Seward for the 13th annual Armed Services Combat Fishing Tournament in 2019.

The 15th Annual Armed Services YMCA Combat Fishing Tournament will return to Seward on May 26. The event, hosted by the Armed Services YMCA of Alaska, will send 200 junior enlisted service members on a deep-sea fishing trip of a lifetime to thank them for their service. In just a few short years, the Armed Services YMCA Fishing Tournament has become the largest military appreciation fishing tournament in the United States.

“The true mission of our organization comes alive when the charter buses enter the city of Seward with a police and fire escort, being saluted and cheered,” said Sarah Riffer, Armed Services YMCA of Alaska Executive Director. “We feel honored to give these incredible Alaska-based junior enlisted military service members the experience of a lifetime. They have served our nation with honor and courage, and we are glad to have this opportunity to thank them for their service.”

Since the first tournament was held in 2006, hundreds of community partners and volunteers have donated their time and resources make this tournament possible for service members. This year is no different. Two hundred junior enlisted service members will be treated to a full day of fishing on a professional charter, free fish filleting and packaging, and memories to last a lifetime.

The Armed Services YMCA Combat Fishing Tournament would not be feasible without the Seward Fishing Charter Fleet’s participation. This year, 16 local charter vessels have donated their boats, crew and expertise to the event, allowing 200 deserving service members to participate. The 2021 Seward Fishing Charter Fleet is: Alaska Dream Charters, Alaska Northern Outfitters, Alaska Saltwater Charters, Alaskan Fishing Adventures, Anchor Down Sportfishing, Aurora Charters, Current Affair Charters, Hooked Charters LLC, J-Dock Fishing Co., Miller’s Landing, ProFish-n-Sea Charters, Puffin Fishing Charters, Saltwater Safari Company, Seward Charters, Seward Military Resort and The Fish House.

The Armed Services YMCA of Alaska provides no- and low-cost programs to make military life easier for nearly 75,000 active-duty enlisted military and their families each year within the state of Alaska. The ASYMCA does not receive government funding, and does not charge dues or membership fees for its programs. Your tax-deductible donation to the ASYMCA, a top-rated nonprofit, will make a significant impact on the lives of enlisted service members and their families.
