The Seward High School Pool is currently open by appointment for lap swim and family swim, with mandatory COVID protocols enforced to protect all swimmers. Though predominantly in use by the Tsunami Swim Club, the pool is accepting lap swim appointments for the noon hour Monday-Friday and for evenings Monday-Thursday. Additionally, appointments may be made for Friday evening family swim time, during which the pool is divided into thirds and split among three families for simultaneous use.
For both lap and family swim, COVID protocols include mandatory masks for anyone outside the pool, screenings required for entry, and distancing measures that limit the number of simultaneous swimmers. It is also strongly recommended that swimmers arrive in swimming attire.
“Come in your suit if possible so that you don’t have to spend a lot of time in the locker rooms,” said Pool Manager Sylvia Ingram. “Because the locker room is a confined, small space where COVID can be transmitted.”
Ingram also stressed that reservations are required for attendance, and that walk-ins will not be admitted.
“You have to call and make a reservation,” she said. “You can’t just show up.”
Ingram went on to say that COVID protocols have prioritized the Tsunami Swim Club’s needs over those of the public, but expanded public use will be more available when the swim season ends in May.
“Eventually we’re going to put more programs back in,” Ingram said. “Because the Swim Club can’t fit a whole bunch of people in the pool like they used to because of COVID, they are spending a lot more hours using the pool, so that pushes the other stuff, less time for other things. When things get back to normal we’ll have more programs, and swimming lessons should be coming up soon.”
Lap swim will remain open by appointment weekdays from 12-1 p.m. and at varying times Monday-Thursday evenings. Family swim appointments may be made for Friday evenings. Admission is $5 for adults and $4 dollars for children, with punch cards available which can be redeemed for 10 visits. Call (907) 224 -9050 between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. to make a reservation.
