Longtime Seward Resident, Kathleen Vay Verschueren, 72, died Thursday, May 7, 2020, at her home in Seward with her family by her side.

No services will be planned per Kathy’s wishes.

Kathleen was born May 15, 1947, in Tacoma, Washington. She graduated high school in Washington. In 1978 she moved to Seward, where she has lived ever since. She worked for the Breeze Inn, Weslyan Nursing Home, Seward Mountain Haven, and Seward Market Place.  Kathleen loved crocheting, reading, and cooking.

The family wrote, “Kathy was loved by the community for her warmth, sassiness and humor.  She loved tooling around with all kinds of arts and crafts, but her true joy was her two grandsons, Jack & Charlie, as she would do anything for them. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends. As per her wishes, there will be no service.”

She was preceded in death by her parents; father, Robert Merriman, and mother, Florence; stepfather, John L. Verschueren; and brother, Thomas W. Verschueren.

She is survived by her sister, Cheryl Verschueren of Seward; daughter, Elizabeth Johnson of Seward; son, Mikael (Johanna) Kinney of Seward; grandsons, Jack and Charlie of Seward; brother, Robert Merriman, Jr. of Tacoma, Wash., and sister, Robin Kinney of Ketchikan; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be may in memory of Kathy to The American Legion Post #5, P.O. Box 306, Seward, Alaska 99664, or the St. Peters Episcopal Church in Seward, P.O. Box 676, Seward, Alaska 99664.
