Donald Augustus Sutherland passed away peacefully at the age of 82 on November 27, 2020, in Anchorage, Alaska from heart related issues. He was born on Aug. 13, 1938. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Marilyn, son Darrell (Lisa) Sutherland, Stepdaughter Diane (Robert Brown) Reynolds; grandchildren, Ashley Sutherland, Dylan Sutherland, Eli Brown and Emma Brown; brother Alan (Janet) Sutherland; Sister Helena R. Poortvliet, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alice C. Hohmann and Donald H. Sutherland; sister Harriett E. Cuno; and his son, Steven Sutherland. The family dogs, Folly, Stormy, and Windy were waiting for Don at the other side of the Rainbow Bridge.
Don was a force to be reckoned with and had a quick and “spirited” sense of humor. Once you met Don, you wouldn’t forget him. He was quick-witted and was always willing to engage in a lively banter. He was a huge part of the Seward community. Don served in the Navy. He was a long-time legionnaire, a 25-year member of the Seward Volunteer Fire Department, as well as involved in the Elks Lodge. He was also one of the more notable American Legion Riders. Don was very civic minded and involved in the Planning and Zoning Commission. He was a past president of the Chamber of Commerce.
Due to COVID 19, memorial services are deferred until summer. In lieu of flowers, Don requested donations be made to Seward American Legion Post 5 and Seward Volunteer Fire Department.
